Making Protective Masks with Scraps

As we have been called upon my Governors and city leaders to wear masks in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19, it is difficult for many of us to know where to find them, and no one wants to go store hopping at this time.  Initially, I used the basic technique of tying a bandana around my face, or using an elastic ski mask, but those had issues of falling off my nose and leaving a gap on either side of my nose.

So I finally broke down, and dusted off the sewing machine.  Here are my first three masks using some scraps of quilt fabric from an old project, and an old tye-died bandana (that had some rips in parts of it).  I didn't have any elastic, so I salvaged the elastic waist band from an old pair of underwear (yes, we are putting undies on our face ?). I cut the elastic down the middle length-wise so the bands would be more comfortable and so I could get more masks out of the limited supply.

I watched this video as a reference:

I made one modification, inserting a 5" piece of soft wire tie between the finished layer and middle layer of fabric, and top-stitching it in place to serve as a wrap around the nose.  This wire is something I had lying around that I use for gardening for tying plants to tomato cages.

These masks have worked pretty well for their intended purpose.  If you want masks that are more form-fitted, there is a slightly more ambitious project that uses a printable pattern you can find here:

Let me know how your project goes.  If you get good at it, maybe you can share some masks with your neighbors as a friendly gift!
